Nicole Austin – Scandalous

{July 15, 2008}   Tied Up, Tied Down by Lorelei James

Businesswoman Skylar Ellison is firmly in control of her life. So getting tangled up with a sexy Wyoming cowboy—and conceiving a baby in the parking lot of a honky-tonk—wasn’t in her plan. Since it appears the daddy has taken off for greener pastures, the only thing to do is pull up her bootstraps and carry on alone.

Cattle rancher Kade McKay returns home after a year on the range, and is knocked for a loop when he learns he’s the father of a three-month-old baby girl. When Skylar refuses to marry him, Kade grits his teeth, moves in and plays house by her rules to prove he’s a man in for the long haul.

Despite Skylar’s insistence they are to remain strictly parenting partners, their old passions flare hot as a brush fire, spurring Kade to demand absolute sexual surrender from the headstrong woman. Skylar willingly submits her body to the hot-blooded cowboy but she’s leery of handing Kade the reins to her heart.

Can Kade convince Skylar the wicked sex games aren’t a temporary distraction? Or will he have to bust out the ropes to show her he wants to be tied to her…forever?

Nic’s Recommendation:

Tied Up, Tied Down is book 4 in the must read Rough Riders series. I love this scorching hot series and have highly anticipated each new release. I’m so glad Ms. James wrote Skylar and Kade’s story. They captured my interest in Cowgirl Up And Ride when Kane—Kade’s twin—wronged Skylar and Kade pulled a switch on her, assuming his brother’s identity. A surprise pregnancy is only one of the major hurdles Kade and Skylar must overcome. They both have a lot of mistakes to make up for in order to redeem themselves.

*Spoiler alert*

I have a few issues with this installment of the series. There has to be a book missing between 3 and 4—the story of Chassie and Trevor. In Long Hard Ride, book 1, Trevor was in a relationship with Edgard, who returned home to Brazil when Trevor couldn’t give him what he needed. In Cowgirl Up And Ride, Trevor was working for Chassie’s father and was her “squeeze”. There’s wasn’t much about them in the story. Shockingly, in Tied Up, Tied Down, Chassie and Trevor are now married. *insert sound of tires screeching on asphalt* How’d that happen and how’d I miss it? I have so many questions about this couple.

My other picky issue with the whole series is that there are way too many characters with “C” names. LOL! Many times its difficult to remember which “C” is who and how they are connected to the others.

That said, the Rough Riders are a great set of books, Tied Up, Tied Down is not to be missed, and Ms. James is a wonderful writer whose name is at the top of my autobuy list. Good stories draw you in and give the reader a vested interest in the characters, as this series has done that for me. I can’t wait to read what’s happening with everyone and want to know more about all of the characters who feel like old friends. I really hope there will be more steamy and emotional stories of the McKay and West families in the future!

If you have not read the Rough Riders series, I highly recommend you pick them up from Samhain Publishing. You won’t be disappointed. And psst, Ms. James, if you happen to read this, we need Chassie and Trevor’s story. Please!

Rhian says:

I soooooooo want this book. But I wasn’t quick enough you know where, so now I have to get hubby to give me the US visa card. He hates it when I use the Aussie or Singapore one on the Samhain site. hehe
Maybe I can sneak it out of his wallet when he’s not looking.

Okay, woman, first off, THANK YOU for the awesome review! I’m so glad you loved the book and my little world of rough and tumble cowboys and the women who grudgingly love them.

Secondly, you didn’t miss a book. Seriously. Oh how I wish I’d made that a little clearer. That’s been the #1 question on the minds and tongues of everyone who follows the series. I thought about taking out a press release (kidding!) or putting something on my blog…instead I’m tasking you to get the word out 🙂 Kidding – I have some ‘splainin’ to do, huh?

There’s method to my madness. I swear. So you’ll be happy to know the issue of Chassie and Trevor and — whoa — them all of a sudden being married in Tied Up, Tied Down? WTF? when they were just dating in Cowgirl Up and Ride? is addressed in the next book in the series, Rough, Raw and Ready, which will be out in November sometime. See…Edgard comes back. Yes indeed. In their world three and a half years have passed. And I wanted Chassie and Trevor to have been married for at least a year when that happened. So Rough, Raw and Ready takes place seven months after Tied Up, Tied Down. Never fear, all will be explained. The reason I didn’t blather on is because I had enough backstory to deal with, with Kade and Skylar and didn’t want to add to the mix more backstory with secondary characters (because I’ve taken some hits from reviewers who’ve said TOO MANY CHARACTERS!) I can’t help it. I love stories with multiple threads and I don’t consider it “series baiting” either, but just a way to show that books can be like real life, populated by people you love, people you hate and those people do affect decisions be they good or bad.

Oh, and I did have Skylar comment in the first part of Tied Up, Tied Down about what the HELL was up with all the “C” and “K” names in the McKay family (my sneaky way of letting readers know — what was I thinking when I started this?) Oy. It’s been suggested too, that I post a family tree on my blog so people can keep track of the McKay/West clan. That’s a damn fine idea. One that I have no time for….so whatcha doin’ right now?

Thanks again, Nic, you rock.

PS If you come to Wind Cave I’ll buy you a margarita!

And how come I’m not on your blog roll, huh? For shame 🙂

Joy Roett says:

‘C’ names difficult you say? I found them easy. There’s Carolyn and Carson (parents) then Cord, Cameron, Colby, Colton, Carter and Keely (yeah she’s one of the many ‘K’s.

The Rough Riders series is AWESOME!

Woot! I can’t wait to read the next book, Lorelei!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for esplanin. *g*

You’re not on my blogroll. *gasp* How’d that happen.

Nic *racing off to fix that right now*

PS Woohoo! You’re on for drinks when I make it to Wind Cave!

Nikki says:

I don’t think its to many characters. I absolutely love that you have so many different characters with their own stories. But my favorite is the Cassie and Trevor story. But you don’t talk about their beginning story….D: If you ever think about it, and please do consider it, I know I will be one of the first ones going to buy it!! I have been dieing to read about them, but haven’t been able too.

Nikki says:

P.S. LOVE the stories. They are absolutely amazing. And your latest one, the one with Keely, was HILARIOUS!!! Absolutely wonderful darling. ;D Keep up the good work old chap. 😉
